"The protector against evil spirits and illness."
 

According to legends, Shoki regarded his life to serve as physician to the emperor.  This deity reached throughout Asia and his paintings are put in front of houses to ward of evil spirits.  Shoki is shown with a fierce facial expression and is said to be in the moment of expelling demons of plague.
